What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a remedial body technique that is extremely gentle and very relaxing. Bowen works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic or organic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation. It empowers the body’s own healing resources achieving balance, resulting in fast and lasting relief from pain, hormonal problems, fertility issues and many other problems.
Bowen is a vibrational energy therapy, safe to use on anyone, newborns to the elderly, with any condition from sports injuries to chronic problems.
A treatment comprises sequences of small gentle moves, each at a specific site on the body. There is not forceful manipulation, just a light cross-fibre maneuvering of a muscle, tendon or ligament, which is very relaxing.
The precise location of the Bowen moves correlate markedly with the latest research into the meridian energy system, acu-points and myofascial trigger point therapy.
Observation also suggests the lymphatic system is greatly affected by this technique.
This gentle and effective modality brings substantial relief frequently after the first session, and generally clients only need two or three treatments, usually one week apart. Treatments can be done through clothing when preferred, as no oils are used. Treatment sessions can last from 10 to 50 minutes.
Bowen facilitates the balancing of a broad range of conditions. It can address any problem (with medical supervision where appropriate) as the treatment is holistic. Bowen produces an integrated body response, and consequently improves circulation, lymphatic and venous draining, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins, joint mobility, posture, normalisation of cellular physiology and tissue integrity.
Choosing a Bowen Therapist
It is best to choose a registered therapist, preferably one with a Diploma of Bowen Therapy who has done extensive training in assessment and treatment. Please visit our Practitioners page to view the Bowen Therapists at All Degrees of Health. Private health rebates may apply with some health funds.
What to Expect
A treatment will typically last between 30 minutes and one hour. It can be provided through a layer of light clothing, although you may be asked to remove heavy or thick garments. During this time, the therapist may leave the room for periods of two to five minutes at a time. This allows time for your body to respond to the treatment and for the necessary changes to occur in your body before commencing the next sequence of moves.
The person may experience relief after just the first session and significant resolution or recovery within three sessions. However, chronic or long-standing conditions or repeat injury may require additional treatments and if symptoms do not resolve, you should see your doctor.
